Because every death has a name. And every name has a story.

Stand UBC, in conjunction with Stand Canada, is launching a campaign to bring attention to the lives of Darfuri victims of genocide. Stand wants to look beyond the numbers, and recall the lives of those who have been lost.

Fuel give me fire and Let it Burn!

STAND UBCs Firewood Run (FWR) will be a cross-country running event that will take place at Jericho Beach Park on Sunday September 27, 2009 from 9am-1pm. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness for the situation of refugees in Darfur and funds to bring some relief from that situation. Fuel for cooking fires is an essential resource for refugees in Darfur, yet to venture outside the camps to collect it women risk rape and murder. To make this connection, each participant in the FWR will carry a small piece of firewood as they complete the race. All funds raised by the FWR will go to NGOs still active in Darfur following President Al-Bashir's expulsion of humanitarian aid from the region.

The FWR will consist of two events: a 5km and a 10km run. A minimum donation of $15 is required to participate in the 5km race while the 10km will require a minimum of $30, participants may make this donation themselves or collect it in pledges. Registration information is available at the FWR website: www.run4darfur.ca. Online donations are possible, but cash pledges/collections will also be accepted on the day of the race.

Following the race there will be the Stand for the Dead Memorial. Music and refreshments will be provided to wind down the day as we announce the race winners and bring an update on the ongoing crisis in the Sudan.

Itinerary:
10am - 5km run
10:45am - 10km run
12:00 noon - Race announcements, winners, awards, as well as a minute of silence and memorial for the victims in Darfur
